Success Stories

Industrial Projects

House of Raeford – Chicken processing – Identified over $120,000 in energy savings with a Simple Payback of less than 4 months. Savings were focused on chiller heat recovery, fuel and electric billing savings, chilled water re-use, compressed air, and electric demand control.

Austin Quality Foods (Keebler) – Identified radio frequency oven technology as a way to reduce energy cost, increase plant throughput, and improve product quality. This technology was successfully installed on multiple processing lines.

Southeastern Container – Worked with this manufacturer of plastic soda bottles to reduce energy use and increase throughput of their pre-formed PET blow molding line. In addition to energy savings, the results of the study enabled them to defer purchase of a new $7,000,000 Sidel oven.

Guilford Mills – Mr. Welch conducted two in-plant test installations to demonstrate that IR pre-heating of foam increases bond strength and reduces variability in foam to fabric laminating. Mr. Welch assisted Guilford Mills in the ensuing bid and purchase of a 100 kW IR pre-heater. Less than a year later, they installed an identical IR pre-heater on another laminating line.

Corning, Inc. – An assessment provided this manufacturer of fiber optic cable with project plans for over $800,000 in savings with an aggregate Simple Payback of under 3 months.

Infrared Annealing of Plastic - Testing by Mr. Welch showed a major plastics manufacturer how IR heating can be used to anneal their plastic film 120 times faster than their hot air ovens. Energy consumption was reduced by a factor of 20. The manufacturer installed this equipment the next budget year, primarily justified by production rate increases.

Commercial and Institutional Projects

City of Asheville, NC - Worked with City of Asheville staff to identify over $150,000 per year in energy cost reduction opportunities.

TIAA-CREF – Corporate Campus – Over $66,000 per year in energy savings identified, much of it in IT equipment. Mr. Welch returned a year later to assist TIAA-CREF with certification of their flag ship building as an ENERGY STAR labeled building.

Town of Columbus, NC - Identified the opportunity to reduce annual pumping costs by over $20,000 per year. This represents a 25% reduction in the Town’s electric bill. The SCADA system to make this possible was installed within six months.

RBC Center - Sports Arena – Worked with the RBC Center staff to identify $60,000 per year in energy cost reduction with a 1.4 month Simple Payback.

Lone Star Restaurants – Conducted investigations at seven locations and projected potential savings across their entire portfolio of restaurants. Identified $1.3 million in Low Cost and No Cost energy reduction measures. This represents 11% of their total energy spend.

Utility Projects

Customer and Staff TrainingMr. Welch is a frequent trainer for utility staff and their Commercial and Industrial customers. Recent training subjects include “Energy Efficiency 101 for Commercial Buildings”, Preparation for the Certified Energy Manager exam, and various process heating topics. Recently, these trainings have become more web-based.

Duke Energy Process Heating Program For almost 20 years, Duke Energy has provided their largest customers with technical assistance and expertise in Process Heating. Much of the work has been outsourced and Mr. Welch has served as the lead technical resource for this work for more than a decade.

Central Maine Power ESCO ValidationOver a three year period, Mr. Welch served as the lead engineer and analyst in providing M&V services to Central Maine Power’s Power Partners program.
